Title: The Vocalist
The Vocalist
30cm x 30cm | Acrylic on Canvas
The Story: The Color of Sound
"The Vocalist" is a sensory exploration of the moment a melody takes flight. Painted in the expressive, high-contrast style of the Fauves, this work captures the raw energy and emotional weight of a singer in mid-expression. It is a tribute to the "vocal frontline"—the artists who have used their voices to narrate 500 years of Black British history. By using "wild" colours to represent sound, the painting visualises the soul, grit, and resonance of the music that inspires my practice.
Craftsmanship & Materials: What is it made of?
The Medium: Created with professional-grade acrylics, chosen for their ability to hold the sharp, energetic edges required for Fauvist mark-making.
The Surface: A 30cm x 30cm archival-quality canvas, providing a compact but powerful stage for the heavy texture and vibrant palette.
The Process: Hand-painted in my private studio, this piece was built using an "impulsive" technique. Rather than focusing on soft transitions, I used bold, unblended strokes to represent the vibration of a voice. The process is deeply intuitive; the colours are applied with a rhythm that mirrors the cadence of a live performance, ensuring the energy of the singer is "locked" into the paint.
Ways to Enjoy: An Auditory Experience
Music Room Companion: This is the ultimate piece for a studio, music room, or any space where sound is celebrated. It acts as a visual anchor for any collection focused on Black British music and creativity.
The "Frontline" Set: Within the 30cm x 30cm series, "The Vocalist" provides a beautiful contrast to "Rasta Man," representing the melodic and spiritual side of the heritage alongside the warrior spirit.
Framing Flexibility: With its deep, painted edges, it offers a contemporary look when hung directly on the wall. For a more prestigious "Gallery" feel, a black floater frame would make the vibrant Fauve colours truly "sing."
